Controls
Move your character using the buttons on the directional pad (d-pad). When you are not moving, the d-pad is also used to navigate between different menus and to choose your Pokemon's move.
Press the "A" button to confirm a selection, to talk to someone and to investigate an object. Press the "A" button a lot as most conversations in the game cannot be moved forward nor can a Pokemon's selected move be executed until the "A" button is pressed.
Push the "B" button to cancel a selection. The "B" button can be used in lieu of answering "No" to a question and can also be used to back out of menus.
Press the "Start" button to open up the menu. From the menu you can check the status of your Pokemon as well as look over your inventory of items.
Open up the "Items" menu and press the "Select" button to rearrange your items.
Press "Select" during battle to rearrange the order of your Pokemon's moves. Pressing "Select" on a move and then pressing either up or down on the d-pad will move the location of the move. For example, if you have a full move-set (four moves) you will have to switch the location of one move with the other.
Open the "Items" menu and select an item to hot-key. Hot-keying an item lets you use it without having to open up the menu and select it. Once an item is hot-keyed, press "Select" to use it.
Basics
Catch as many Pokemon as you can. One of the main goals of "Pokemon Crystal" is to catch all of the wild Pokemon roaming around. To capture a Pokemon you will have to first weaken it in battle and then throw a "Pokeball" at it.
Train your Pokemon. The object of every Pokemon game is to catch as many Pokemon as you can and to win all of the game's gym badges. To do this you will need to have a high-level team of Pokemon that is well rounded (different types). Train your Pokemon by battling the game's other trainers or by battling wild Pokemon.
Talk to everyone. Many of the game's characters give out free items and even Pokemon, but you have to talk to them first.
Pick up every item on the ground. Items in "Pokemon Crystal" appear in the form of Pokeballs and can be found in towns, dungeons and on routes.
