How to Evolve Onix in FireRed

In "Pokemon FireRed," as in other "Pokemon" games, some Pokemon have the ability to evolve into more powerful forms. Most Pokemon evolve when they reach certain levels, while others, like Onix, require special procedures to trigger their evolutions. To perform the procedure for Onix, you'll need the Metal Coat item. Once you perform it, Onix will evolve into Steelix, which is a Steel and Ground-type Pokemon.

Instructions

    • 1

Play the game until you have defeated the Elite 4 and acquired the National Pokedex. Speak to Bill in the Cinnebar Pokecenter; he will take you to the Sevii Islands.

    • 2

Go to the boathouse on the first island and take the boat to quickly reach Chrono Island. Make your way to the Memorial Pillar, which is a huge boulder with the words, "Here lies Tectonix," engraved on it. The pillar is located on the southern tip of the island. Pick up the item Metal Coat lying to the left of it.

    • 3

Give the Metal Coat to your Onix to hold. Head to the nearest Pokecenter, which is in the town of Five Island. Go up to the second floor of the Pokecenter.

    • 4

Speak to the person on the far right side of the room and select "Trade Center." You have to trade the Onix to evolve it, so your options are either to trade with yourself or to trade with a trusted friend. To trade with yourself, you'll need another Game Boy Advance and copy of the game.

    • 5

Select the Onix holding the metal coat as the Pokemon you want to trade and any of your friend's Pokemon (or your own Pokemon in your other copy of the game) as the one you want to receive. Once both players accept the trade (or once you accept the trade on both Game Boy Advance systems), the Pokemon will be transferred. Onix evolves as soon as it has been traded while holding the metal coat.
