How to Get a Charizard in Pokemon Emerald

Charizard is the final evolution of the starter Pokémon Charmander in the Pokémon video game series. Charmander changes form/evolves into Charmeleon, and finally to Charizard through battle and earning experience. Although not naturally found in Pokémon Emerald, Charizard can be obtained through trade from either Pokémon Leaf Green or Pokémon Fire Red games. You can only transfer this Pokémon between the different version of the game after you beat each game and obtain the National Pokédex.

  • Copy of Pokémon Leaf Green or Fire Red with any of the evolutionary forms of Charmander

  1. How to Get a Charizard in Pokémon Emerald

    • 1

Put one copy of each game into each Game Boy system and connect the Game Boy Advanced Game Link Cable to each Game Boy. Turn on each game and load the save file by pressing the A button or the "Start" button until you can choose from three options: "Continue," "New Game" and "Option. Press up or down on the control pad until "Continue" is highlighted and press the A button.

    • 2

Determine in your copy of Pokémon Fire Red or Leaf Green if Charizard or any of its prior forms/evolutions, Charmander or Charmeleon, are in your active party by pressing the "Start" button, which will open the main menu. You will see several options, including one titled "Pokémon." Highlight the "Pokémon" option by pressing up and down with the control pad. Press the A button. This will display your active party. The active party can show up to six Pokémon at once. Once you have looked at the active party, press the B button until you are out of all menus.

In the copy of Pokémon Emerald you will need a Pokémon to trade for Charmander/Charmeleon/Charizard. You can see what Pokémon are in your active party to trade in the same way it was accomplished in Pokémon Leaf Green or Fire Red.

    • 3

Travel to a Pokémon Center if the desired Pokémon is not in your active party. Pokémon Centers can be found in all major towns. You will need to access the PC in the Pokémon center. When you enter any Pokémon Center you will see an attendant behind a large desk. To the right of this desk is an intractable item known as the PC. Walk directly in front of this object with your character and press the A button while facing the PC.

This will open up the PC Menu. Highlight the first option on the PC Menu, known as either "Someone's PC," "Lanette's PC" in Pokémon Emerald or "Bill's PC" in Pokémon Leaf Green or Fire Red. The title of this option depends on previous actions taken in the game. Press the A button. You will be sent to another menu that reads "Deposit," "Withdraw," "Move," and "Items." If you have six Pokémon already in your party, you will need to deposit one Pokémon.

    • 4

Highlight the "Deposit" option with the control pad and press the A button. You will see a screen with the Pokémon currently in your party. Highlight which Pokémon you would like to deposit with the control pad, then press the A button. Once you have deposited a Pokémon, exit this screen by pressing the B button. You will be asked to confirm that you want to leave this screen. Highlight "Yes" with the control pad and press the A button. This will take you back to the Deposit/Withdraw/Move/Item menu.

    • 5

Move the cursor so "Withdraw" is highlighted on the screen and press the A button. This will open the storage boxes. All Pokémon that you have caught and are not in your active party can be found here. Using the control pad, move the hand on the screen until it is over the desired Pokémon and press the A button. This will move the Pokémon into your active roster.

If you do not see the desired Pokémon on this screen, you will need to switch the box you are in. Above the box where the Pokémon are shown is a title box with arrows pointing left or right. Highlight the left or right icons with your hand and press the A button. This will change the box that you are in. Search the boxes until you find the Pokémon that you need.

When you are done withdrawing Pokémon, press the B button. The game will ask you if you would like to leave this screen. Highlight "Yes" with the control pad and press the A button. Continue to press the B button until all menus have been cancelled and you can move your character again.

    • 6

Enter a Pokémon Center and proceed to the second floor. Pokémon Centers can be found in all major towns in each game. Travel upstairs by walking up the stairs located in the Pokémon Center to reach the second floor.

    • 7

Speak with the Cable Link Trade Club attendant on the second floor of the Pokémon Center on both games. The Cable Link Trade Club attendant will be the center character behind the counters at the top of the screen. Walk up to the center attendant and press the A button while facing the attendant. The attendant will request that you save the game if you want to make a trade.

The game will then begin the process to save the game, asking you to confirm this request. Highlight "Yes" with the control pad and press the A button. The game will ask you if you are sure you wish to save. Highlight "Yes" again and press the A button. The game will begin to save. Do not turn off the power while the game is saving.

    • 8

Walk your character in each game to one of the center computers and press the A button after you have been warped to the Trade Room to begin the Cable Link Trade Club.

You will enter the trade screen at this time. Choose which Pokémon you wish to trade in Pokémon Emerald. The player with the copy of Pokémon Leaf Green or Fire Red will choose Charmander/Charmeleon/Charizard. Confirm that you both wish to trade and the trading animation will begin.

Once the animation completes you can exit from the trade screen at the bottom of the screen. Highlight "Exit" with the control pad and press the A button. When both characters confirm, the screen will close and you will find yourself back in the Trade Room. Walk to the glowing square at the bottom of the screen to exit the Game Link Trade Club.

    • 9

Save the game after you have exited the Cable Link Trade Club. To save the game press the "Start" button to open the main menu. On the main menu you will see several options including "Save." Press up or down on the control pad until "Save" is highlighted and press the A button. The game will ask you if you wish to save, highlight "Yes" with the cursor and press the A button.

Once you confirm this option, the game will ask you if you are sure. Highlight "Yes" again and press the A button. The game will begin saving. During the saving process do not turn off the Game Boy. After you have saved you can continue your game.

Look at the active party in Pokémon Emerald as described in Step 2. If the Pokémon has not evolved/changed its form into Charizard yet, you will need to level it up. Charmander will evolve/change form into Charmeleon at level 16, and Charmeleon will evolve/change form at level 36. If the Pokémon is past this level and has not changed form, all you have to do is earn another level and it can change its form.

To level up the Pokémon you will need to either battle other Pokémon or use the item Rare Candy on it. The Pokémon earns experience points by defeating other Pokémon. When a Pokémon earns enough experience points it will raise in level, increasing its power. Pokémon evolve/change form once it reaches a high enough level.
