Time Change Calculation in Pokemon Gold

In many of the post-first-generation "Pokemon" games, including the sister games of "Pokemon Gold" and "Silver," the world of the game runs on a day-night cycle and uses both a clock and a calendar. Many events and actions in the game require the clock to either be at a certain time or for a certain amount of time to have passed. Because of this, it is useful to be able to change the in-game time, a feature Nintendo has included.
  1. Background

    • The need to change the time in "Pokemon Gold" can arise when a time-specific event is needed or desired. Changing the in-game time is used to easily activate certain time-specific events, such as the appearance of swarms, the lottery, the acquiring of seals, Buena's passwords, prizes from the Pokeathlon Dome and rematches.

    Preparation

    • To correctly use the calculator to change the time in your game, you will need a few pieces of information from the specific saved "Pokemon Gold" game you wish to change. First, write down your name on a piece of paper as it appears on the game. The calculators are case-sensitive, so if your name appears as "John," only "John" will work. Using "JOHN," "Jon," "j0hn" or any other variation will not work. Next, open the Stats screen on your game and write down the displayed ID number and the amount of money you currently have.

    Opening the Time Changing Screen

    • Now that you have gathered the necessary information, access the screen that will allow you to input the password to change time. Do this by turning off your "Pokemon" game and then turning it back on. Wait for the the title screen (the screen that displays the name of the game) to appear, and when it does press the "Down," "Select" and "B" buttons at the same time. This will bring up a prompt asking if you wish to reset the password. Pressing "Yes" will prompt you to put in the correct password for your game. This method works in both "Pokemon Gold" and "Silver," but does not work in "Pokemon Crystal."

    Acquiring the Correct Password

    • Leave your Game Boy on with the password prompt on the screen. To get the password, visit the time changing calculator at the Psypoke, Legendary Pokemon or Pkmn.net websites. At each of these sites, the calculator will prompt you for your name from your game, your ID number and the amount of money you currently have. Feed this information to the calculator and press the button beneath to calculate your password. If you have filled the fields out correctly, the password it gives you will work at the prompt screen on your Game Boy and will allow you to change the time. You can also use the manual password calculator listed in the Resources section of this article, but it is a more difficult process.
