How to Rebuild Crystal Cartridges

Pokemon Crystal was released for the GameBoy Color in 2001. Many of the batteries inside the cartridge used to store data and time information have started to decay from old age, and no longer hold a charge. Replacing that battery, and then rebuilding the cartridge to house the new battery, is necessary for your Pokemon Crystal cart to function as it was intended.

Things You'll Need

  • CR2025 battery
  • Soldering iron
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Adhesive tape

Instructions

    • 1

Use the needle-nose pliers to unscrew the screw on the back of the "Crystal" cartridge. Turn the needle-nose pliers counter-clockwise slowly until the screw comes off.

    • 2

Slide the front of the cartridge down, exposing the circuitry located within.

    • 3

Locate the CR2032 battery in the cartridge. This battery is round, silver and easy to locate in the circuitry.

    • 4

Use the soldering iron to melt the tab connecting the battery to the circuit board. Once the tab has melted, carefully use the pliers to remove the old battery.

    • 5

Place the new battery, positive side down, into the circuitry where the old battery was located. Use your adhesive tape to tape the battery down where the tabs used to be.

    • 6

Slide the front of the cartridge back up to close the cartridge. Replace the screw on the back of the cartridge.

    • 7

Insert the cartridge into your GameBoy Color. Save your game, turn off the cartridge and then turn it back on to verify the save is still there. This means that the battery has been successfully replaced.
