Pokemon Red Version Tutorial

Press the "Start" button on the main menu to start a new game. Professor Oak will give you some information about Pokémon. Read through this until he asks you what your name is.

Use the directional pad to move the cursor between the available choices and pick one you like. Your character's name can be either "Red," "Ash" or "Jack." Press the "A" button with the "New Name" option selected to enter your own name. Use the digital pad and "A" button to input a new name of up to seven characters, then press the "A" button with the "END" option highlighted to exit the name input screen and continue.

Select a name for your rival from the list of available options. Take either one of the presets or select "New Name" again and enter a name like you did for your own character. When all of this is done, your character will start the game inside a room in Pallet Town.

Use the directional pad to move your character left, right, forward and backward. Stand in front of an object and press the "A" button to examine or use it.

Walk down the stairs and press the "A" button while facing your character's mother to initiate a conversation. She will tell you that Professor Oak, who lives next door, is looking for you.

Walk out the front door to leave your house, then walk upward and try to leave town. Professor Oak will run up to you and prevent you from leaving.

Follow Oak back to his lab and watch the short scene that plays. When asked to choose your own Pokémon, walk up to the table that holds the Pokéballs and press the "A" button in front of the one you are interested in. You will see a short description of the Pokémon inside and you will be asked if you want it. Do this with all three Pokéballs, then choose the one that you want to start your adventure with.

Select "YES" when asked if you want to give it a nickname and follow the same procedure as when you entered your own and your rival's names.

Try to leave the building and your rival will stop you. You will be challenged to a Pokémon battle.

Press "A" on the "FIGHT" option to attack your opponent. The other three options are "PKMN," which allows you to switch the Pokémon you are using to battle, "ITEM" to use a special item like a healing potion on your Pokémon and "RUN" to try to flee the battle.

Select "FIGHT" for this battle, then one of the available attacks your Pokémon has. Do this until either you or your opponent is defeated.

Leave the lab after the battle, then exit the town to start your adventure.
