How to Fix Game Boy Games That Won't Save Anymore

Gameboy cartridges often have a built-in save game feature, which requires a battery to work. Over time, these batteries will cease to function, and replacing them restores the "Save Game" function. Fortunately, it is an inexpensive and quick process to replace these batteries.

Things You'll Need

  • 3.8 mm screwdriver security bit
  • Lithium 3V battery, size CR2025
  • Butter knife, optional

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the screw on the back of the Gameboy cartridge using the 3.8 mm screwdriver security bit. Slide the top half of the cartridge away from the bottom half, detach the two pieces of the case and remove the cartridge board.

    • 2

Remove the battery from the cartidge board. The batteries are firmly attached to the boards. If necessary, gently pry the battery from the board using a butter knife.

    • 3

Put the new battery on the cartridge board. Place the new battery in the same location as the one you removed, making sure the negative terminal faces up. Attach the battery to the board using glue or scotch tape. Reassemble the game by reversing the order in which you took it apart.
