How to Evolve Scyther in Crystal

In the game "Pokémon Crystal" the Pokémon Scyther can evolve into an extremely powerful Scizor, but it cannot evolve by leveling up the way most Pokémon can. Instead, you must follow a specific procedure requiring both a special item and a trade. You will need a little patience and the help of a friend, but if you take the time to follow the right steps, you can enjoy the use of the "Pincer" Pokémon, Scizor.

Things You'll Need

  • "Pokémon Crystal" game
  • 2 Nintendo "Gameboy" systems
  • An additional copy of "Pokemon Crystal," "Pokemon Silver," or "Pokemon Gold"
  • "Gameboy" link cable

Instructions

    • 1

Catch a Scyther during the "Bug Catching Contest" mini-game.

    • 2

Acquire the "Metal Coat" item by catching wild Magnemites. Eight percent of wild Magnemites carry the item, so you may need to catch many to find a Metal Coat. You can also acquire a Metal Coat by going to the Power Plant and finding an NPC who will trade a Magneton for one of your Dugtrios. This Magneton will always carry a Metal Coat.

    • 3

Equip your Scyther with the Metal Coat.

    • 4

Link your "Gameboy" with the second "Gameboy."

    • 5

Trade your Scyther, equipped with the Metal Coat, to the second Gameboy for any Pokémon. The Scyther will evolve into a Scizor as soon as it transfers to the second Gameboy.

    • 6

Trade the newly-evolved Scizor back to your original game.
