How to Fix a Color Gameboy

Since its debut in 1998, the Game Boy Color has provided players with the opportunity to play video games in color at every desired destination. Fortunately, when problems with the Game Boy Color arise, the system's original design makes it possible for players to repair it themselves. Depending on the problems you are facing with your Game Boy Color, the remedy may be as simple as checking to make sure that the games and accessories you are using with your Game Boy are licensed by Nintendo.

Instructions

  1. How to fix Gameplay and Audio Problems with the Game Boy Color

    • 1

Check to see that games and accessories you are using with your Game Boy Color are licensed by Nintendo. The gold or black Nintendo "Official Seal" will appear directly on games or on the original packaging of the product. If the seal is not there, the product is likely not licensed by Nintendo. Unlicensed games may not work with your Game Boy Color, or accessories may work in a limited capacity.

    • 2

Replace the batteries in your Game Boy Color and attempt to turn the system on. If the system turns on, the problem was caused by old batteries. If the system still does not turn on, check to see that the current batteries have been inserted properly according to the diagram behind the battery slots.

    • 3

Adjust the volume on your Game Boy color using the dial on the side of the system. The original Game Boy will have a higher volume than the Game Boy Color, so remember that your system's lower volume may be part of the design.

    Fixing Game Boy Color Buttons

    • 4

Remove the batteries from your Game Boy Color and make sure that it is turned off.

    • 5

Dip a toothbrush into a small cup of water, tapping it onto the edge of the cup to remove excess water. Use the toothbrush to clean around the buttons, and then use the toothbrush to clean the grooves surrounding the buttons. Use a rag or paper towel to dry the Game Boy Color.

    • 6

Allow the Game Boy Color to dry for a few hours, and then replace batteries and turn the system on. If the buttons on your system are still sticky, repeat the process again.

    Fixing Game Problems

    • 7

Look for the Nintendo "Official Seal" to make sure that the game is licensed by Nintendo. If there is no seal, the game is not licensed by Nintendo and may continue not to work with your system. Some games licensed by Nintendo also have compatibility problems with the Game Boy Color. Contact Nintendo Support by calling Nintendo's Customer Support department at 1-800-255-3700.

Check to see if the game has been inserted properly into the Game Boy Color. The game's label should be visible when it is inserted into the Game Boy Color. Remove the game and gently reinsert it, pushing downward until you hear the game click into place.

Turn the Game Boy Color on and see if the game functions. If the game does not work, remove the game and gently reinsert it according to Step 2 again.
