How to Find a Silph Scope

A Silph Scope is a tool in the Pokémon game that allows you to see the invisible, namely ghosts. Generation I Pokémon games, Red and Blue, and their respective remakes for the Gameboy Advance, FireRed and LeafGreen, include a section on Lavender Town and the sacred Pokémon graveyard, a tall building haunted by ghosts. Using the Silph Scope, you can uncover the identity of different ghost-type Pokémon, then battle, capture, train, and raise them as you would any "living," regular Pokémon. This useful piece of technology, however, requires a few steps in the game to obtain it.

Instructions

  1. Background

    • 1

Enter Celadon City and head to the center of the city. The Silph Scope is found in Team Rocket's Headquarters. You will need to complete a few steps to get into that secret lair. Once in Celadon City, depending on the game version, you may or may not have access to certain parts of the city.

    • 2

Go to the Pokémon Center and switch out your Pokémon team. Make sure your party has several strong fire, ice, poison, bug, or flying types. Try to avoid rock, ground, and water types.

    • 3

Head south and use the learned technique HM01 Cut, a damage-dealing technique, on the green, two-pronged tree that blocks your way between the fence to access Erika's gym. There are seven trainers besides the gym leader, ranging from difficulty level 21 to 26. Erika's Pokémon in the Blue version are the plant-types: Victreebel, Tangela, and Vileplume. If the average level of your Pokémon is around 27, you shouldn't have much of a problem defeating the gym leader.

    • 4

Defeat Erika, then head north to the gaming center next to the Celadon City shopping center. Team Rocket is most likely loitering around the city.

    • 5

Enter the gaming center, located near the Celadon city mall. Head as north as possible in the small lobby and investigate the small poster on the wall by pressing "A."

    • 6

Enter the hideout by taking the stairs that open after the secret switch behind the poster activates. A few battles and mini-puzzles await. If you defeated Erika, you should have no problem. At the end, Giovanni is waiting.

    • 7

Defeat Giovanni. The leader of Team Rocket isn't difficult to conquer, but save the game before the match anyway. Watch Giovanni flee after being defeated. He will drop a bag of coins in the gaming center and the Silph Scope. Using the Silph Scope, head into Lavender Town's Pokémon graveyard. Now your Pokémon will be able to battle ghosts without becoming afraid.
