How to Mod a Gameboy Color

Turn off your Gameboy Color and turn it over. Press down on the back battery latch to release the battery cover and remove the two batteries from the compartment.

Use your small flat-head screwdriver to remove the six screws located on the sides and corners of the back of the Gameboy. Set the screws aside.

Use your fingers to gently pry the back half of the Gameboy from the front. Set the back half aside. The internal components will now be exposed in the front half of the Gameboy.

Plug your soldering iron into the nearest power source and let it warm up for a couple of minutes. Then use your clippers to cut the end of your audio cord (available from any electronics store) so it is only about four inches long from end to end.

Use the wire cutters to strip a couple centimeters off of the ends of the plastic. Then locate the volume potentiometer in the upper right corner of the Gameboy housing. It's a small rectangular piece of black plastic with five small metal pins sticking out of it.

Use your soldering iron to solder the ends of the two exposed wires to the second and third pins from the left. Wait for the soldering to cool and set.

Use your Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws from the sides of the green motherboard. Then lift up the motherboard and flip it over.

Locate the headphone jack in the bottom corner of the board. Use your Phillips screwdriver to remove the jack and run the other end of your audio cable (the end with the jack) around the board and fit the 3.5mm jack in the old one's place.

Replace the motherboard and reassemble your Gameboy in the reverse order you took it apart.
