How to Fix a GBA SP

The Nintendo Gameboy Advance Special Project (or GBA SP) was originally released in 2003; however, despite being 7 years old, the hand-held video game console is still very popular. Like all electronic equipment, the GBA SP can be susceptible to malfunction. Symptoms can include game crashes and screen distortion, games freezing up during play and the game not starting up at all. There are a few troubleshooting procedures you should attempt before giving up on your hand-held.

Instructions

  1. Troubleshooting

    • 1

Turn off the GBA SP, remove the game cartridge and experiment with other games. It is often the case that the issue is not with your GBA but with the game itself. If other games work just fine, you will need to replace the malfunctioning game.

    • 2

Recharge your GBA SP with your charge cable. A low battery can cause the GBA SP to malfunction. Turn off the GBA SP, insert the charger cord into the GBA SP's charger jack and plug the charger into an electrical outlet. The charging process can take three to four hours.

Make sure the game cartridge is firmly inserted when you are playing. If the game cartridge is not inserted properly, the game can freeze up during play.
