How to Make a Shiny Starter in Pokémon FireRed

Shiny Pokémon sparkle when sent into battle and are a different color than regular Pokemon. They're also rare, with a 1-in-8,192 chance of encountering one. These same odds apply to the starter Pokemon selected in the beginning of Pokémon FireRed. Although the chances are slim, there's a method that eventually will make the Pokémon you choose shiny. Although there's no telling how long it will take, patience will prevail.

Instructions

    • 1

Start a new game by selecting "NEW GAME" at the main menu after the title screen. If this is your first time playing the game, a new game will start automatically when you press "Start" at the title screen.

    • 2

Choose whether you're a boy or girl, name your character, then name your rival. The game starts you off in your room.

    • 3

Go down the stairs at the top-right corner of the screen and exit your house. Head north to the grassy patches at the edge of Pallet Town. Professor Oak stops you and brings you to his lab to choose your starter Pokémon.

    • 4

Press the "Start" button and select "SAVE" to save your game.

    • 5

Choose from Bulbasaur, Charmander or Squirtle by approaching the appropriate Pokéball on the table to your right and pressing "A." If the Pokéball you choose isn't the Pokémon you want, press "B" or select "No" to choose another.

    • 6

Press "Start" after choosing your Pokémon. Then highlight the "Pokemon" menu and press "A." Select your Pokémon, press "A," then select "SUMMARY." If the Pokémon is a different color than normal and has a small star on the summary page, it's shiny. If not, reset your game.

    • 7

Repeat Steps 5 and 6 as many times as necessary until you get a shiny Pokémon.
