Things You'll Need
Instructions
Find the Metal Coat. In Pokemon Gold, Silver, Crystal, Heart Gold, and Soul Silver, find the Metal Coat on the S.S. Aqua after you defeat the Elite Four. In Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green, find the Metal Coat at Memorial Pillar. In Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, catch wild Magnemite and Magneton. There's a chance they're holding the item. In Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, find the Metal Coat on Iron Island, or catch wild Magnemite, Steelix, Beldum, Bronzong, or Bronzor. There's a chance they're holding the item.
Make sure Onix is one of the six Pokemon in your party. You may have to use the PC in any Pokemon Center to switch him with another Pokemon.
Equip Onix with the Metal Coat. Choose the Pokemon option on the Start menu and select Onix from the list. There is an option for "Item" or "Hold". Select this option and choose the Metal Coat. Onix is now holding the Metal Coat.
Connect another Game Boy to your own using a game-link cable if playing Pokemon Gold, Silver, or Crystal. The game in the other Game Boy must be the Pokemon Gold, Silver, or Crystal version. If using Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Fire Red, or Leaf Green, the other Game Boy Advance must have a copy of Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Fire Red, or Leaf Green. The game-link cable needed depends on the type of Game Boy you're using. For instance, if trading between two Game Boy Advance consoles, you need a Game Boy Advance game-link cable. The cable plugs directly into the game-link cable port on the side of the console. If you're trading between Pokemon Pearl, Diamond, Platinum, Heart Gold, or Soul Silver, you do not need a game-link cable since the Nintendo DS connects to other Nintendo DS consoles wirelessly.
Go to any Pokemon Center and talk to the receptionist in charge of the trade station on the second floor of the building. This must be done in both games on both consoles. She asks you to save your game in order to enter the trading station.
Trade Onix to the other game. Select Onix and choose any other Pokemon on the other console for the trade. Confirm that the trade is okay. After Onix arrives on the other console, he evolves into Steelix.
Trade Steelix back to your original game. You now have an evolved Onix.
