Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is a tactical role-playing game that was released in 2003. The player controls a collection of characters that do battle against enemies throughout the game on a grid-like surface. The player can choose specific classes (for example, a Healer) for each character. Specializing each character in a specific class is quicker and more efficient than trying to build multiple "jack of all trades" characters. What makes this game unique, compared to other role-playing games, is the "law system," which prevents you from being able to use certain weapons or spells in certain battles. Breaking these rules can cause your character to be put in prison, giving you a handicap in the battle.
Golden Sun
Golden Sun is a role-playing game that was released in late 2001. The player controls four characters that journey throughout the world battling monsters and finding spells. The game primarily takes place in a dungeon setting, where there are certain puzzles that have to be completed before moving on to the next. Similar to other role-playing games, Golden Sun features a "random encounter" system. Random encounters force the player into battle with an opponent, giving them the opportunity to level up their characters before facing more difficult foes.
Mega Man Zero
Mega Man Zero is a side-scrolling shooter in which players destroy enemies and get power-ups, but in this game, the areas can be explored more freely. Zero has specific weapons in his arsenal, including the Buster Shot (projectile shot), the Z-Saber (a powerful sword), a shield and a triple rod. The game also borrows traits from previous Mega Man games, where certain elemental power-ups are won from boss battles that deal more damage when fighting certain bosses. After each completed level, the player is graded from S (the highest), to F (the lowest). Grades can affect the unlockables you receive after the game is completed.
Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire
Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire is a role-playing game that was released in 2003. The main character is a young (unnamed) boy who has the goal of becoming the best Pokemon trainer in the world. The main character starts out with a weak Pokemon that gradually grows stronger as the game goes on. Throughout the journey, players will discover even more Pokemon, puzzles, other Pokemon trainers (who often want to battle) as well as gym leaders who give out badges if you win. This is the first game in the series to feature 2-on-2 battles, instead of the standard 1-on-1 battles seen in previous Pokemon games.
