How to Delete Game Boy Games

Video games are getting more and more complex every year. Many games for the Gameboy and Gameboy Advance systems allow you to save your progress so that you can take a break and return to the game later. Unfortunately, those saved game files can be stuck on the game when you buy or sell it secondhand. You will need to delete the game file in order to save a new game file or to make the Gameboy appear as though it is brand new.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the Gameboy game cartridge into the Gameboy console and turn the unit on.

    • 2

Wait for the splash screens to play out and open the game's main menu. Choose the main game mode and access the game file selection screen. Most Gameboy games can hold data for between one and three saved games. The game file selection screen will have the saved files on the game cartridge and most also include a "Copy" and "Erase" button somewhere on the screen.

    • 3

Look for a "Delete", "Erase" or "Clear" option on the game's file selection screen. Often this is located near the bottom or right-hand corner of the screen. On some games, you may have to select a screen and find the delete function on the confirmation screen--the game will ask, "Is this the game you want to load?"

If you have begun your save game file, you have gone too far. Turn off the unit and return to step 1.

    • 4

Select the "Delete" function or press the button combination to access the delete function. The game will warn that deleted games cannot be recovered and ask if you are sure that you want to delete the file. Select "Yes" and press "OK" or the "A" button, depending on the game's instructions.

    • 5

Repeat for any other save files you wish to delete.
