Mario Land Games to Play

Along with an appearance on home consoles like the Nintendo and Super Nintendo Entertainment Systems, Nintendo's Mario also made his way to the handheld realm, breaking into a series of games for the Nintendo Game Boy in 1989. First appearing in "Super Mario Land", a game that went on to spawn two sequels and forever change the franchise, "Mario Land" on the Game Boy gives gamers on the go a new way to experience their beloved Mario.
  1. Super Mario Land

    • Gamers who are fans of classic "Mario" gameplay and arcade shoot-'em-ups such as "Gradius" are sure to enjoy the first "Super Mario Land". Released in 1989, this was Nintendo's first attempt to bring the red-hatted plumber to the small screen.

While the sprites are tiny and somewhat difficult to see, the gameplay remains true to the traditional "Mario" game. However, it does venture away from the series, doing away with King Koopa (Bowser) and offering a new set of enemies in its stead. It also has flight and submarine stages where you shoot enemies from a motor-craft, something never before seen in a Mario game.

Super Mario Land 2: The Six Golden Coins

    • Play "Super Mario Land 2: The Six Golden Coins" if you're a fan of more traditional Mario games like "Super Mario Bros. 3" and "Super Mario World". Released in 1992, "Super Mario Land 2: The Six Golden Coins" has Mario on an island with themed stages. As you unlock new stages, you are free to explore the map, adding the element of multiple stage exits to the game. Fans of exploration and completists are sure to love this.

The game is also the first to offer a save function, keeping track of your progress, making it so you don't have to complete the game in a single run like past Mario titles. Along with this, "Super Mario Land 2: The Six Golden Coins" introduces Mario's latest nemesis, Wario, to the franchise, a villain who eventually turns into a sort of anti-hero and gets his own series of games.

Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3

    • Look for an alternative platform experience in "Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3", which was released in 1993. Bearing only minor similarities to the original "Mario Land" titles, "Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3" doesn't even have Mario in it. Instead, you play as the money-hungry Wario on his quest for gold and fortune.

The game is quirky and original, and while it lacks the speed and enemies typical to ordinary Mario games, it is filled with exploration and collection elements. "Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3", like "Super Mario Land 2: The Six Golden Coins", offers a save function so you don't lose all of your treasure each time you turn off the game.

Still, Mario fans will still find something to enjoy in "Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3". Wario wears different hats to power up like Mario, he collects coins and he can jump on enemies to defeat them.
