Gameboy Color Instructions

The Nintendo Game Boy had been out for years and needed a new upgrade that would change the way handheld systems were played. The result was the Game Boy Color. Featuring more memory and more space than the classic Game Boy, the Game Boy Color was a precursor to the Game Boy Advanced and Nintendo DS. Owners of the Game Boy Color can follow these instructions to operate the handheld console and learn all of its functions.
  1. Games

    • The only way to use the Game Boy Color is by owning a Nintendo Game Boy game. The Game Boy Color is backward-compatible, so players can use original cartridges in gray or a black Game Boy Color cartridge. Insert the game with the label facing out and the opening of the cartridge facing down. If the game fails to load, blow on the bottom to clear any dust or dirt. Never insert a game the wrong way because it could damage both the game and the system.

    Power

    • Unlike the four AA batteries required for the Game Boy, the Game Boy Color only takes two double AA batteries. A power pack accessory is available for the system and can be charged or plugged in for unlimited play. A light on the front of the Game Boy indicates how much battery power there is by the brightness of the light. If the light blinks or flickers, new batteries are needed.

    Operating

    • Turn on the Game Boy by flipping the small switch on the top of the system. A volume adjustment is located on the right side of the system. Move the dial up to increase the volume and down to decrease the volume. Use the D-Pad for any directional movements, including menus or during game play. The A and B buttons act as action buttons during a game. For example, the A button may make a character jump, while the B button makes it shoot. Press the Start button to pause the game and use the Select function for a variety of uses depending on the game.

    Changing Colors

    • When playing an original Game Boy game, you can select a specific color tone to play in. Each color has a different code that must be entered when the system's logo appears on the screen. "Up" chooses brown, "Down" chooses a color mix, "Left" chooses blue and "Right" chooses green. A combination of the directional arrows creates other colors like red, yellow, orange and dark blue.

    Accessories

    • Game Boy Color can use a collection of accessories to help with the gaming experience. A screen magnifier attached over the top of the Game Boy Color screen nearly doubles the screen for players with bad eyesight or those who just want to view a bigger screen. The Game Boy Color light clips to the top of the system and acts as a light for playing in the night. The light is adjustable and small enough to fit in a pocket.
