How to Use Forretress
Find a Pineco. In all versions of the handheld Pokemon games, you can only obtain Forretress by evolving a Pineco. Unfortunately, a Pineco isn’t easy to obtain either. In Pokemon Crystal, Gold, and Silver, you’ll need to headbutt trees to, hopefully, start a battle with one. In Emerald, you can find a small number in the Safari Zone. In Diamond and Pearl, you can only find Pineco on Routes 203, 204, and 229 and in Eterna Forest.
Evolve Pineco. If you’re fortunate enough to get a Pineco, then you’ll need to keep him in your party and use him regularly. Once he reaches level 31, he’ll evolve into Forretress.
Teach Forretress HMs. You will receive HMs (Hidden Moves) throughout the game to help you explore new places and to navigate around existing locations. Only certain pokemon can learn each of these HMs. Forretress can learn Strength and Rock Smash so be sure to teach him these important and powerful moves as soon as possible.
Understand Forretress’ Sturdy ability. Sturdy prevents Forretress from being affected by moves that are meant to destroy opponents in a single hit. This ability means you can use Forretress against any pokemon who have those types of moves.
Understand Forretress’ natural skills. Many of the skills your Forretress will already have after the evolution or will gain by leveling up either cause damage to him or require him to take on damage. For example, Self Destruct damages the opponent but will cause Forretress to faint. Double Edge, which Forretress will learn at level 59, hurts him and the opponent, as well. Be careful when using these skills during battle.
Teach Forretress strong TMs. Forretress can learn a number of powerful Technical Moves (TMs) which can effectively replace moves that also cause him damage in battle. Toxic, Giga Drain, Hyper Beam, Solarbeam, and Earthquake are all good choices. Remember that Earthquake will not work against flying pokemon.
