Levels
Numerous games for the SNES offer cheats that allow you to skip to any level you desire, instead of playing the game in a straight narrative. One such game is "The Lawnmower Man." During game play, press pause and then press "B," "R," "A," "Select," "Select," "Y," "A," "B," "Y," "A," "B" and "Start." Resume playing the game and then press "Start," "A," "L," "L" and "Start." You will be able to jump to any level within the game you choose. Level skipping cheats are ideal if you are stuck on a certain level within a game but want to proceed anyway.
Characters
Fighting games for the SNES -- such as "Mortal Kombat" -- feature cheats that allow you to fight as certain characters, or fight against certain characters. In "Mortal Kombat," you can fight as Goro after you complete the game. During the end message, press "Up," "Left," "Select" and "A" at the same time. The title screen should appear. Start a new game. To fight against Reptile, play a one player campaign until you reach the Pit level. During the Pit level, achieve a double flawless victory without using any blocks and perform a fatality at the end. You can then fight as Reptile.
Hard To Kill
One of the most powerful cheats you can have on a SNES game is the power of invincibility, or close to it. Several games feature cheats that allow you to live forever, including "Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back." During game play, grab the second controller and hold down "Select," "A," "B," "Y" and "X." This will cause your character to be invincible. If you want 99 lives during "Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back," go to the game selection screen. Press "X," "Y," "B," "B," "B," "X," "A," Y," "Y," "B," "A," "X" and "Y." You will hear Darth Vader say "impressive" if the code has been entered correctly. Then press "Start" before the game demo begins and you will have 99 lives.
Odd Cheats
Some cheats for the SNES alter game play in an odd way. For example, "Ghouls 'n' Ghosts" features a cheat which allows you to play the game in slow motion. During the title screen, press "Up," "A," "Down," "A," "Left," "A," "Right" and "A." Start playing the game and then press "Start" to pause it. While paused, hold down the "B" button and then unpause the game. From here on out, the game will be in slow motion. Other cheats don't alter game play, but do add an odd twist. In "Super Mario World," you can enter the map screen and, if you stay there long enough, you will hear a steel-drum cover of the classic "Super Mario Bros." theme.
