How to Get Through the Cave in Original Pokemon Red for GameBoy

In ̶0;Pokémon Red Version,̶1; Diglett̵7;s Cave is the only place where you can encounter the ground-type Pokémon Diglett and, more rarely, its evolution Dugtrio. Diglett̵7;s Cave also serves as a convenient route between Pewter City and Vermilion City. Following the linear progression of the game, you̵7;ll first come to Diglett̵7;s Cave after you arrive in Vermilion City. You̵7;ll find it just to the east of the city and it̵7;s your only route to return to Pewter City and obtain HM05: Flash.

Instructions

  Enter Diglett̵7;s Cave just to the east of Vermilion City. Go down the ladder.

  Head north through Diglett̵7;s Cave. The cave follows a zig-zag pattern, going left then up, left then up and so on. You won̵7;t encounter any obstacles or branching paths.

  Use water- or grass-type Pokémon to defeat any Diglett or Dugtrio you encounter. Note they will typically be between levels 29 and 31. You must wear down their health significantly and use a number of Poké Balls if you wish to capture them, particularly the more powerful Dugtrio.

  Go up the ladder at the end of the cave and exit through the door to the south. Go south to find a house where you can trade an Abra for a Mr. Mime as well as a house where one of Professor Oak̵7;s aides will give you HM05: Flash. Alternatively you can cut the tree and head west to access Pewter City.
