Hints for New Super Mario Brothers

The "New Super Mario Bros." game for Nintendo DS will remind players of the original "Super Mario Bros." game with its 2-D platform. However, with new moves, new power-ups and new bosses, the game is designed to keep fans intrigued. With eight action-packed worlds for players to beat, there are a lot surprises to be found along the way.
  1. Unlock Worlds

    • Players will notice that the worlds are laid out on the lower screen of the Nintendo DS. However, these worlds are not laid out in a straight line--levels 4 and 7 are below the other worlds on the maps and cannot be accessed without a special trick. To proceed in the game, you must beat the boss at the end of the world you are on, but beating the boss in world 3 takes you to world 5, just as world 6 goes directly to world 8. To unlock worlds 4 and 7, you must go back to worlds 2 and 5 by touching the world on the lower DS screen and beat the boss at the end as Mini Mario. It's a good idea to save any mini mushrooms along the way for this purpose.

    Extra Mushrooms Houses

    • There are plenty of mushroom houses that can be unlocked by spending the large coins found on each level. Entering the mushroom houses gives you the opportunity to get extra lives and power-ups that will help you in the game. You can unlock additional mushroom houses at the end of each level. As you make your way through a level, the clock is counting down the time. If you finish a level when the clock is on numbers that end with 11, 22 or 33, a red mushroom house will appear at the start of the world, giving you an extra power-up item. If you finish a level with the clock on numbers that end in 44, 55 or 66, a green mushroom house appears, giving you an extra life. For finishing times ending in 77, 88 and 99, an orange mushroom house will appear, giving you a mega mushroom that will turn Mario into Mega Mario and allow him to crush anything in his path.

    Extra Lives

    • At the end of each level, you will have to jump on a flagpole in order to clear the level. Similar to the original "Super Mario Bros." game, the higher Mario lands on the flagpole, the more game points are generated. In "New Super Mario Bros.," Mario can sometimes land at the very top of the flagpole. If you can get Mario to end the level by landing at the top of the flagpole, you will get extra lives in return.

    Play as Luigi

    • While Mario is the main character of the game, you can also play through the game as Luigi. Before the game is started, there is a screen that allows you to select a file to play. If the "L" and "R" buttons are pressed and held down while the file is selected, Luigi will appear instead of Mario.
