What Is a GCM File?

The GCM file extension is classified as a game file and are associated with certain games manufactured by Nintendo. GCM files are exclusively linked to GameCube games. While the GameCube console is no longer manufactured, its games can be found second-hand and will still play on some computer programs.
  1. Developer

    • The GCM file extension was developed by Nintendo. The GCM file was first introduced in 2001 with the release of the GameCube, the fourth console released by the company. At the time of publication, the GameCube has been replaced by the Wii gaming console, which requires different file extensions.

    Contents

    • A GCM file contains the images associated with a saved GameCube game. The file does not contain the programming language associated with the game, but rather the graphics that are necessary for the game to run. GCM files describe how the graphics are displayed when a game is operated on the GameCube console or a computer. Similar files include GBA, ELF and NES.

    Storing

    • GCM files can be burned to a mini-DVD disc, which will play on the GameCube. The files are also compatible with certain Windows and Mac programs. When they are played on a computer or gaming console, the game will not save to the hard drive of the device. The game and its GCM files will store back to the mini-DVD disc.

    Compatible Programs

    • If you want to play a game with GCM files on a computer, you must use a GameCube emulator. On a Mac computer, the only available program is called Dolphin. That program also has a Windows version, and Windows will play GCM files with the programs GCEmu, Dolwin and WhineCube.
