My GameCube Is Overheating

The Nintendo GameCube can overheat, if left on for a long period of time, or if the exhaust fan becomes congested with dirt, dust or pet hair. If you notice that your GameCube feels hot, the fan is making a loud noise, or if you experience power issues, unplug the unit immediately and allow it to cool off.
  1. Best Practices

    • To avoid overheating, always keep your GameCube on an open, flat surface free of carpeting, padding or other fabric that can block the exhaust vents. Periodically check the vents, located on the sides of the system, for dust or hair buildup. If you see blockage in the vents, you can remove it using a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment or with a can of compressed air. Also make sure you are only using Nintendo-licensed AC adapters to plug in your system. Other AC adapters may not be completely compatible and not feed the right amount of power into the GameCube, even if at first it seems to function correctly.

    Troubleshooting

    • If you suspect overheating but are not sure, listen to make sure the fan is operating correctly. The fan should turn on and be audible, but not loud, after 30 minutes. If the fan seems to be operating correctly, try resetting your AC adapter to ensure that the problem is not due to a malfunctioning outlet or accessory. Unhook all game accessories, unplug the GameCube and allow the system to sit for about one minute. Replug in the GameCube and turn it on. If it turns on correctly, try plugging in one accessory at a time to the cube and see if you can isolate an issue with an accessory. If problems continue, your system will need to be repaired.

    Nintendo Warranty

    • Nintendo of America offers a warranty on defects in material and craftsmanship for 12 months from the date of purchase. You will need to have registered your unit at the time of purchase or have a receipt or some proof of purchase that shows your original date of purchase to be covered by the warranty. If your unit is under warranty, consult the Nintendo website to locate your nearest authorized repair center.

    Cleaning

    • If your system is already outside the warranty ̵1; opening the cube and performing repairs will otherwise void a valid warranty ̵1; you can open the system for a deeper cleaning to remove debris vacuums or compressed air cannot reach from the outside. Unscrew the corner screws on the bottom of the GameCube and pull the bottom half of the unit out of the casing. Unscrew the two screws holding the cooling fan in place, and clean the fan and unit completely using compressed air. Reassemble the unit and test to see if it continues to overheat.
