What Do You Need to Hook a GameCube to a TV?

The Nintendo GameCube was released in September 2001 as the followup to the Nintendo 64. As of April 2011, more than 22 million GameCube units have been sold. If you've recently acquired a GameCube or are thinking about dusting your old GameCube off, there are some components you need to make sure you have, and have hooked up correctly, before firing it up.
  1. TV Input

    • The Nintendo GameCube can be connected to a TVs AV inputs if you are outputting the video from the Nintendo GameCube using a standard AV cable. Alternatively, the Nintendo GameCube can be connected to component inputs if you are outputting the video from the GameCube using a component cable. AV inputs are often marked "AV" or "Audio/Video." Component inputs are often labeled "Component."

    Video Cable

    • The Nintendo GameCube comes with standard AV cables, but you can also purchase a component cable to output your video in high definition. If you are using the standard AV cable, plug the single-connector side of the standard AV cables to the ANALOG AV OUT output on the back of the Nintendo GameCube, then connect the red, white and yellow connectors on the other end of the cable to their corresponding inputs on the TV. Alternatively, if you are using a component cable, plug the single-connector side of the component cable to the DIGITAL AV OUT output on the back of the Nintendo GameCube, then connect the red, blue and green connectors on the other end of the cable to their corresponding inputs on the TV.

    RF Modulator

    • If your TV does not have component or composite inputs, you can connect the Nintendo GameCube to the TV through the coaxial input using an RF modulator. To use an RF modulator, plug the single-connector side of the standard AV cables to the Nintendo GameCube, then connect the red, white and yellow connectors on the other end of the cable to their corresponding inputs on the RF modulator. Plug one end of a coaxial cable into he coaxial output on the RF modulator and then plug the other side of the coaxial cable to the coaxial input on the TV. Turn on the Nintendo GameCube. Turn on the TV and change the input to display the coaxial input.

    AC Adapter

    • Plug the small, black plastic end of the AC adapter that came with the Nintendo GameCube into the DC INPUT on the back of the Nintendo GameCube, above the ANALOG AV OUT output. Plug the other end of the adapter into an available AC outlet. Turn on the Nintendo GameCube.
