Smash Moves
Pressing the "A" button on the GameCube controller will cause your character to perform a simple physical attack. If you press the button rapidly, you will perform repeated, rapid attacks. Every character in the game has four smash moves, which are among the most powerful attacks available. To perform a smash, simply jam the left thumb stick in any direction and press the "A" button at the same time. If done correctly, your character will spark before the move goes off. You can also charge these moves by holding "A," but you will be at risk of attacks while your character charges.
Taunts
If you are enjoying your match and want to rub it in your opponent's face, consider using your character's taunt ability. Taunts can be performed by pressing "Down" on the directional pad located on the left-hand side of the GameCube controller. Your character will be open for attack during the taunt, so be aware of your surroundings before tossing out an insult.
Clone Characters
The controls for "Super Smash Brothers Melee" are relatively simple: The "A" button is used for physical attacks, and the "B" button is used for special attacks. However, the game is even easier to understand once you learn that many characters are clones of each other, dramatically simplifying the control scheme. Clones have the same basic moves but may be stronger or faster than their counterparts. Falco is a Fox clone, Gannon is a Captain Falcon clone, Roy is a Marth clone, and Pichu is a Pikachu clone. If you like a character but are having trouble with battles, try their clone on for size.
Dash Rolls
If you want to be a true competitor at "Super Smash Brothers Melee," you will need to master the dash roll. When you press the "Z" button on the GameCube controller, your character will be placed in a temporary shield. While this shield can be useful against some attacks, standing around with a shield up is an excellent way to be thrown off a map. Instead, pop your shield and immediately jam the left thumb stick in either direction. This will cause your character to quickly roll in that direction. Dash rolls are the perfect way to turn the tables when you are pinned on one end of a map.
