How to Fix a Broken GameCube Wireless Controller

The WaveBird is Nintendo GameCube's wireless controller. It uses a 2.4 GHz radio frequency and two AA batteries to deliver 20 feet of wireless gameplay. There are multiple possible fixes for a broken controller, and alternate ways to fix the same problem. Nintendo recommends you try each one before you look at their repair options.

Instructions

  1. Stuck Buttons or Control Stick

    • 1

Unplug the controller from the system.

    • 2

Slightly dip a clean toothbrush in a cup of warm tap water and scrub around the sides of the buttons and the control stick.

    • 3

Dry the controller off with a paper towel. Let it air dry for at least a couple of hours.

    • 4

Test the controller for better button response.

Character Won't Move or Moves on its Own

    • 5

Push the "Reset" button on the system to recalibrate the controller and reset the control stick to the neutral (center) position. Do not touch the control stick.

    • 6

Alternately, press the "X", "Y" and "Start/Pause" buttons simultaneously for three seconds during gameplay, making sure to not touch the control stick.

    • 7

Unplug the controller and re-insert it while the system is on.

    • 8

Insert another controller in the same port. If the problem disappears, you know the problem is with the controller, in which case it may need to be repaired.

    WaveBird Troubleshooting

    • 9

Look to see that the RF receiver is plugged into the correct controller socket on the GameCube. With the controller turned on, press any button. If a green light flashes temporarily on the receiver, it is working.

    • 10

Turn the small channel dial on the WaveBird and the receiver so that the arrows point to the same number.

    • 11

Change the channel settings on both the controller and receiver.

    • 12

If you are using more than one WaveBird, make sure they are not set on the same channel.

    • 13

Reset the analog stick by turning the WaveBird power off and back on.

    • 14

Make sure that you are no more than 20 feet from the receiver and that the top (between "L" and "R" buttons) of the controller is pointed in the direction of the receiver.

    • 15

Move your game console away or turn off possible sources of interference, such as cordless phones, microwave devices, or wireless LANs (local area networks).
