How to Launch GameCube Backups on a Wii

A GameCube backup is a GameCube game that has been copied onto a CD or DVD. Custom hardware is often used to allow backups to be played, but you can get the same result with a lot less effort by bypassing faults in the console's firmware design. This is sometimes called a "soft mod" because it doesn't require fiddling with much or any of the internal hardware in the console.

Things You'll Need

  • Homebrew Channel enabled Wii
  • Backup launcher program Xi
  • SD Card
  • Computer with SD card reader or attachment

Instructions

  1. Getting the Tools Ready

Download the GameCube backup launcher Xi (see Resources for link) and extract the contents of the zip/rar file to your computer's desktop.

    • 2

Insert the SD card into your computer and copy everything from the "Xi" folder you downloaded to the root of your SD card.

    • 3

Insert the SD card into your Wii and start up the console.

    Installing the Backup Launcher

    • 4

Load up the Homebrew Channel on your Wii console.

    • 5

Select the "cMIOS-res1-Installer." The screen will go black but don't be alarmed; it may take a moment to load.

    • 6

Press A on the Wiimote to start the installation. Select "WAD" installation mode and it will begin.

    • 7

Once it says "Success," restart your Wii console.

    Playing the Game

    • 8

Insert the GameCube backup disc of your choice and select Homebrew Channel again.

    • 9

Select and run the GameCube backup launcher Xi.

    • 10

With the game in the console, it should now load up and let you play the GameCube backup.
