GameCube Controller Troubleshooting

The Nintendo GameCube relies on a hand-held controller, featuring analog sticks, a directional pad, and various buttons, for game play. You may experience problems with your controller, such as an error message appearing on your television screen saying “No Controller” as the controller stops working. The character in your game may move on his own or does not respond to your moving the control stick on the controller. Troubleshoot the controller before you throw it out or take it to a shop for repairs.

Instructions

  1. “No Controller” Error

    • 1

Check each controller and any other components you are using with your GameCube to ensure they are officially licensed by Nintendo, as unlicensed controllers may not function with the console. Look for a graphic with the Nintendo logo stating the product is officially licensed.

    • 2

Shut down your GameCube console and unplug any controllers you installed. Plug one controller back into the plug labeled “1.”

    • 3

Turn your GameCube back on and see if the “No Controller” error appears again. If so, unplug the controller and try a different one.

    • 4

Replace the first controller or take it to a repair shop if a second one is recognized by the GameCube in plug number 1.

    Character Movement Problems

    • 5

Press the button on the front of the GameCube labeled “Reset.” Take your hands off the controller to make sure the control stick stays centered.

    • 6

Press the “X”, “Y” and “Start” buttons on the controller all at once to reset the controller. You must press these buttons while you are playing a game and not touch the control stick for the reset to work properly. Proceed to the next step if resetting the controller doesn't fix the problem.

    • 7

Unplug the controller and clean it with a toothbrush dampened with warm water. Clean around the control stick as well as the buttons.

    • 8

Dry off the controller with a paper towel. Allow the controller to air dry for 2 hours.

    • 9

Plug the controller back into its port to see if the problem persists. If you still have problems, plug in a different controller. If the new controller functions correctly, take the other controller to a repair shop or replace it.
