How to Fix a Formatted GameCube Memory Card

The Nintendo GameCube is the last machine manufactured by Nintendo to use standalone memory cards for the storage of game data. The cards come in a variety of capacities and can store data for multiple users on one card. However, if formatting, reading or writing from the card is disturbed by system shutdown or card removal, the card may become corrupted or wrongly formatted. The card will then be unusable, in which case it will need to be reformatted.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all memory cards from your GameCube.

    • 2

Insert the non-working memory card into Slot 1 of your GameCube. This is the slot located above the port for the Player 1 controller.

    • 3

Turn on your GameCube. On the main menu, select "Memory Card Screen." Your corrupted or wrongly formatted memory card will prompt the GameCube to display a screen asking whether you want to reformat the memory card.

    • 4

Select "Yes" by highlighting the "Yes" button with your controller's D-pad and pressing the "A" button. You will be asked to confirm this action.

    • 5

Select "Yes" once again and press "A" again. Your memory card will be fixed and ready for use.
