How to Play Scratched GameCube Games on Wii

One advantage to the Nintendo Wii is that it is capable of running games released for the GameCube, a previous generation Nintendo gaming console. This added compatibility is convenient, but since most GameCube games are older, they are often scratched or damaged. Fortunately, there are a number of avenues you can take to repair or replace your GameCube game, so that it will work properly on your Wii.

Instructions

Clean the disc with a water-dampened cotton cloth in a non-circular motion (do not use paper). This will remove any foreign substances, including dust, from the surface of the disc, which may be hindering the Wii's ability to read and run the game. Carefully dry the disc and let it sit for a few minutes before inserting into the Wii. This process will not remove the scratches from the disc, but it will help you confirm whether or not the problems you are experiencing are associated with scratches or other contaminants to the surface of the disc.

    • 2

Run the game in another Wii system. This is an efficient way of confirm how severe the scratching is: if it is still unable to run on the second Wii, chances are the scratches are too severe to run properly. If it does run, you may want to consider looking into potential problems with your Wii that could be preventing it from reading the disc.

Take your game into a shop that offers disc repairs. There are many potential repair sources online, but most are untested and could end up costing you more or destroying the disc beyond repair. A shop that offers repairs and has experience should be able to fix the disc (assuming it isn't scratched beyond repair) without the risk of ruining your game.

Replace the disc. This is a last option that should be considered if the disc is still not functioning properly in your Wii. Instead of simply buying a new disc in-store, contact Nintendo to find out if it can be replaced (see the link under References for the contact number). Scratched and broken GameCube discs are not covered under Nintendo's warranty program, but in some situations they offer to replace the game for a fee of $25 (as of 2010), which is substantially less than you would normally pay for a new game.
