How to Make a Gamecube Controller Into a PC Gamestick

The standard Nintendo GameCube controller can easily be repurposed for use on games for PC by purchasing a Chinese-manufactured adapter that converts the controller's original input to a USB. Two versions that support GameCube controllers are available from a manufacturer called Mayflash.

Attempting to convert the controller manually by stripping the wires from the GameCube controller and splicing the wires from a USB input has been discussed in various online forums, but this is not recommended because of compatibility issues that have generally produced dismal results.

Mayflash makes two converters that are compatible with the GameCube.

The first is ̶0;Super Joy Box 13,̶1; and is listed on Mayflash's website as item number PC027. Only one controller can be plugged into each converter. Mayflash also makes ̶0;3 in 1 Magic Joy Box,̶1; item number PC035, which is a three-in-one version converting PlayStation 2, GameCube or Xbox controllers, all on one device. Unlike ̶0;Super Joy Box 13,̶1; which is for only one controller, ̶0;3 in 1 Magic Joy Box̶1; can accommodate three players at once, provided they have one of each type of controller.

Instructions

  1. Hook up the GameCube controller to a PC.

    • 1

Choose a converter. Adapters can range in price from $10 to $30, depending on where you order it. For best results, choose a reputable dealer or retailer.

    • 2

Download and install the device's driver software from the manufacturer's website. An anachronistic 3.5-inch floppy disk is included, but it's useless, since the format has been phased out. Driver software is not compatible with Macintosh-based operating systems.

    • 3

Plug the GameCube controller into the converter and plug the USB into an open port on your PC. The controller must be plugged into the device before the USB is inserted or it will not be detected.

It might be necessary to reassign buttons for easier play with the GameCube controller. This can be done in the "Options" menu of most games.
