Nintendo GameCube Controller Problems

The Nintendo GameCube allows four users to play simultaneously through its four controller ports. The system is also compatible with wireless controllers and other specialty controllers, such as the DK Bongo. Problems can arise from time to time, but many can be solved through some troubleshooting steps.
  1. "No Controller" Message

    • Use only licensed controllers as some unlicensed products may not be compatible with the GameCube. Try unplugging the controller and turning the power off. Plug the controller back in and ensure that is fully inserted into the first socket. Turn the GameCube back on.

    Control Stick Not Working Properly

    • The control stick should be in the neutral position (meaning straight up) when the GameCube is powered on. If you are holding the controller and the stick is pushed to the side when you turn on the console, the controls will be incorrectly calibrated. To solve, reset the GameCube or hold"X," "Y" and "Start" simultaneously for 3 seconds.

    Buttons are Sticking

    • This is normally caused by a foreign substance collecting on the controller. Fill a cup with warm water and dip a clean toothbrush in it. Shake off the excess water and scrub the area around the buttons and control stick. Dry the controller off with a towel and let it air dry for 2 hours before using again. If the controller still does not work, it may need to be replaced. This type of damage is not covered under Nintendo's controller warranty.

    WaveBird Wireless Controller

    • If you are having trouble with your wireless controller, make sure the channel settings on the controller and the receiver match. Also check to see if the receiver is fully inserted into the controller port. If the orange light on the controller is not lit, the batteries may need to be replaced. The wireless function only works within 20 feet of the GameCube console, so move closer if you are having problems.

    DK Bongo Controller

    • Only a handful of games require this controller, a set of bongos used for drumming and controlling motions. Make sure the bongos are compatible with the game you are playing. If the controller is not working properly, try plugging a standard controller into the controller port to see if it works. If it does, your bongo controller may need repairs.
