How to Use a GameCube Controller on Mario Kart
The control stick steers your kart and directs your weapons. When you are throwing an item at another player, move the stick up to throw it forward, and move it down to throw it behind you.
Use the "A" button to accelerate. Note: For a turbo boost at the start of the race, hold down the "A" button after the "2" appears during the pre-race countdown.
Use the "B" button to brake. This is helpful in making sharp turns, but remember to accelerate when coming out of the turn. When you are not moving, hold down the "B" button to drive in reverse.
Press the "X" or "Y" button to throw an item.
Press the "L" or "R" buttons at the top of the controller to drift left or right when making a turn.
Press the "Z" button at the top of the controller to switch characters in-game. (In a two-player game, both players must press the "Z" button at the same time to switch positions)
Press the "Start" button to pause the game. The menu will appear on the screen when you do this. From here, you can restart, resume or quit the race.
