How to Use a GameCube Controller on Mario Games

The Nintendo GameCube controller shares many similarities with past Nintendo console controllers, like the Nintendo 64 and Super Nintendo. Playing Mario games for GameCube is as simple as knowing how to fully utilize the controller. There are several different types of Mario games for the GameCube, but the two most popular are Super Mario Sunshine and Mario Kart: Double Dash!

  1. How to Use a GameCube Controller for Super Mario Sunshine

      Use your yellow "C" stick to move the camera angles, and move Mario around with the gray control stick. Also, use your control stick to climb up ropes.

      Press the green "A" button to jump. To do a triple jump. press the "A" button three times fast. To do a spin and jump, rotate the control stick and press the "A" button. Move your control stick left and right and press the "A" button to do a somersault. Run toward a wall while pressing the "A" button to do a wall kick.

      Press the "B" button on your controller to talk to other characters and to pick up items. Also use your "B" button to throw objects, open doors and pull objects.

      Hold down the "A" button to accelerate your character's go-kart. Once you're driving your character, use the control stick to move the kart around.

      Press the "B" button to brake and to drive in reverse.

      Press the "X" or "Y" buttons to throw any item that you collect.

      Press the "L" or "R" button to drift while driving.

      Press the "Z" button to switch characters with another player. To do this, you both have to press the "Z" button at the same time.
