How to Use Ness in Super Smash Bros Melee

Ness is one of the most unassuming characters in Super Smash Bros. Melee. Most of his standard attacks are nothing to write home about, but he does have psychic powers ...

Instructions

Swing, batter batter batter! Most of Ness's melee moves leave a lot to be desired, so you'll spent most of your time using his special PsychoKinesis moves. However, there is one glowing exception: the Forward Smash, which swings a baseball bat for big damage. Not only is it a fantastic move to use whenever your opponents get too close, but it has good knockback and can often KO an opponent. As an added bonus, it can deflect some projectiles.

Use Ness's PSI Magnet (press "down" and "B") to absorb any energy projectiles, ranging from fire and ice to blasters and opposing PSI powers. While using this move, Ness not only avoids taking any damage from the projectiles, but regains health equal to twice the damage he would have taken. Effective use of the PSI Magnet will either gain you back a fair amount of life, or cause your opponents to completely abandon part of their arsenal against you. Either way, it's a big advantage.

Home thunder to hurt your enemies. Press "up" and "B" for the PK Thunder, perhaps the most versatile move in the entire game. It launches a ball of thunder that can be steered with the controller. This means that unlike most ranged attacks that can only hit enemies in a straight line, a good Ness player can use PK Thunder to hit an opponent anywhere on the screen. As an added bonus, Ness can use this move to charge himself with thunder and launch himself. You can either launch yourself at an opponent to become a human missile, or launch yourself back onto the stage as a recovery move. PK Thunder is probably the most important move for a Ness player to master.

Use Ness's psychic attacks. Ness disdains fighting with his fists, but has a good pair of psychic attacks in PK Flash and PK Fire. The former is charged up by standing and pressing the "B" button, and if released at ground level fully charged, can do a massive amount of explosive damage. Unfortunately, a full charge takes a long time, so this move is better used at low to medium power as a brushback if you can't connect with a forward smash. PK Fire is a strong ranged attack used by pressing "forward" and "B," which can set the enemy on fire and hit a few times to stun. Alternate sending PK Fire and PK Thunder at opponents on the opposite side of the screen to keep them occupied on their approach.

Try the Yo-Yo Glitch. Although tricky to pull off, this glitch can give Ness a slight advantage. Up-Smash an opponent with the yo-yo, charge the yo-yo slightly before releasing it, and make sure the yo-yo doesn't hit anything else. If done correctly, it will injure the next opponent who steps into that space, as long as you step back and just shoot Thunder and Fire in the meantime.
