How to Troubleshoot a Broken GameCube

There's not much worse than sitting down to play one of your favorite video games and finding out that your GameCube is broken. Before you toss your GameCube in the trash, you should troubleshoot your console to see if you can isolate the problem and get it back up and running. Here are some ways that you can troubleshoot your broken GameCube.

Instructions

    • 1

Isolate the problem as much as possible so that you will have a focus with which to continue your troubleshooting. Common problems are a black screen, no sound, no power, video or picture problems, problems with a single game disc and problems with the controller.

    • 2

Verify that the connections are tight for the hardware you are having problems with. For example, if you are having power problems, make sure that the AC adapter is securely connected to the GameCube and is plugged in to the wall outlet. Make sure that A/V cables are all plugged in as well as controller cables.

    • 3

Look for a torn or broken cable. Sometimes a cable can get pinched and broken which will cause it to malfunction or not work at all. Feel the cable as well as examining it to see if you can feel a place that seems irregular. A cable can be broken without a tear in the rubber, so just because you don't see a tear doesn't mean it is not broken. Replace the broken cable and try running your GameCube to see if the problem is fixed.

    • 4

See if there is visible damage to the casing of the GameCube. If your GameCube is telling you that the lid isn't shut when it is, then you may have a broken piece of casing. If you find a broken area, you will need to take it to a technician to have it repaired.

    • 5

Clean out the inside of the disc-loading area. This may fix disc read errors. See if it is sticky or dusty inside and wipe it down with a soft cloth. If you need to use a cleaning solution, pick a cleaner that is safe on electronics. Also you can clean the lens with a lens cleaner solution or by putting a little rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab and wiping it off.

    • 6

Unplug controllers, memory cards and any other accessories that you have connected to your GameCube to see if these are causing a problem. Sometimes non-licensed hardware can interfere with how your GameCube operates.

Check the Nintendo website to find out what an error message means if you are receiving an error message.
