What Is a Router for DSi?

The Nintendo DSi offers plenty of single-player gaming action, but to play games with others, you have to connect to the online WFC service, which lets you join multiplayer games and download new software from the Nintendo store. To access Nintendo WFC, connect your DSi to a wireless router.
  1. Router Basics

    • A wireless router allows your computer and compatible devices to connect to the Internet. The Nintendo DSi can only access the WFC service when connected to a router. Wireless routers typically have a security key that restricts Internet access. To set up a connection between your Nintendo DSi and the Internet, input this security key into the DSi. In public areas offering free wireless Internet, you may not need to input a security key.

    Compatible Routers

    • Most newer routers, including brands like Linksys, Netgear and Belkin, are compatible with the Nintendo DSi. Routers use one of several wireless standards, such as 802.11a, b, g or n. The letters indicate the router's speed, range and security level. Nintendo WFC is only compatible with the 802.11b standard, so Nintendo recommends using a 802.11b router. 802.11n and g routers are also compatible with the 802.11b standard, but only as long as their settings are not set to "g only" or "n only."

    Set Up a Connection

    • To connect to Nintendo WFC via a wireless router, tap the "Start" button on the Nintendo DSi main screen, then scroll to page three, tap "Internet" and select "Connection Settings." On the next page, tap "None" next to one of the three connections, then select "Search for an Access Point." If the Nintendo DSi finds a wireless router in range, the name of the network appears, along with a lock icon. If this icon is a yellow, open lock, the network is unsecured. Tap the network name, then tap "OK," "Save Settings" and "Yes" to connect. If the lock is yellow and closed, the router is using WEP security; if it is gray and closed, the router has WAP security. Type the router's security key in the box. Tap "OK" to submit the key and connect. You only need to do this the first time you connect to the Internet via this router.

    Router Problems

    • If the Nintendo DSi cannot find your access point, move as close as possible to the router. Eliminate any possible obstructions between the Nintendo DSi and the router, including furniture or walls. Also ensure that the router's settings are not set to "disable broadcast." If the router disables its broadcast, the Nintendo DSi cannot connect. If connection problems continue, try changing the router's channel -- if too many routers in the area use the same channel, you may have connection problems. If the Nintendo DSi cannot obtain an IP address, check the router's DHCP settings. Find the router's IP address, then enter it on the Nintendo DSi's Manual Setup screen.
