Setting Up an Internet Connection
Before you can access the Internet with the Nintendo DSi, you must set up a connection. Power on the DSi and tap the green wrench icon. Tap the blue arrows to scroll to the third page. Tap "Internet" and select "Connection Settings." The DSi allows you to set up to three different connections. Tap the "None" button next to Connection 1. If Connection 1 is already in use, use Connection 2 or 3. Alternatively, tap the desired Connection button, and then tap "Clear Settings." Tap "Search for an Access Point," and the DSi scans the area for in-range wireless networks.
Wireless Security
When the Nintendo DSi finds a wireless network, one of three lock icons appears on the screen. A gold, open lock icon indicates an open wireless network. You do not need to enter a security key to access the network. Simply tap the network name to use it.
A closed gold lock indicates WEP security, and a closed silver lock indicates WPA security. WEP security is preferred, since you cannot play multiplayer games when connected to a WPA network. To access either network, you must enter a router security key.
Find the Router's Security Key
Entering the router security key, exactly as it appears in your router's settings, is vital to establishing a network connection. If you do not know the router's security key, open an Internet browser on your computer. Type your router's address in the address bar. This differs depending on the router. For example, the address for DLink and Netgear routers is "http:/ /192.168.0.1." For a Linksys router, enter "http:/ /192.168.1.1." For 2Wire, type "http:/ /home."
Most routers ship without a username and password, so you can usually leave those fields blank. In some cases, the username or password may be "admin" or "wireless." Click "Encryption," "Wireless Settings" or "Network" to view the router security key. Write the key down exactly as shown. Enter the key into the Nintendo DSi to connect to the Internet.
Error Codes
After entering the router security key and saving the settings, the Nintendo DSi attempts a connection test. If successful, a message displays, and you can now connect to the Internet.
If you entered the incorrect security key, the connection test displays Error Code 51300 or 51099. Recheck the security key on your router's settings screen. Tap the "Back" button to return to the key entry screen. Make sure that the code you entered matches the one on the settings screen, and then try the connection test again. If the codes match, but you still cannot connect, contact Nintendo customer support for help.
