What Happens to Tangela in Celadon in Pokemon HeartGold?

The 2010 Nintendo DS game "Pokemon HeartGold" is the partner game to "Pokemon SoulSilver." While playing either version, you encounter Tangela in the Celadon City Gym. Tangela is a Pokemon, No. 114 in the Pokedex. If you want to prepare yourself for the Celadon City Gym battles to receive the Rainbow Badge, learn about Tangela's role in the gym.
  1. Grass Types

    • All the Pokemon with which the Celadon Gym trainers battle are grass-type Pokemon. With a quick glance at Tangela, you may wonder why it appears among the other grass types. Tangela is covered in what appear to be tentacles and may be confused for a water-type Pokemon. Even in its more evolved form, Tangrowth, it appears covered in tentacles. However, it is a grass-type Pokemon and uses grass-type attacks. The tentacles are more accurately thought of as vines. Therefore, Tangela appears in the grass-themed Celadon Gym.

    Gym Leader Pokemon

    • Before you arrive at Gym Leader Erika's Pokemon battle, you fight in four battles in the gym. The first is against Twins Joe & Zoe, and the second is against Lass Michelle. The third is against Picnicker Tanya and the fourth is against Beauty Julia. None of these trainers uses Tangela. When you arrive at the end of the gym and encounter the Gym Leader, Erika, you do battle with a Jumpluff, a Victreebel, a Bellossom and a Tangela.

    Gym Leader Battle

    • You have to defeat all four of Gym Leader Erika's Pokemon to secure the Rainbow Badge for the Celadon Gym. Tangela is the second Pokemon Erika deploys, although she may randomly pull Tangela from battle and return it to the fight later during the battle. Battle with fire and flying Pokemon to take advantage of the weakness of grass-type Pokemon. Tangela's anti-flying move AncientPower is the only power any of Erika's Pokemon have that can weaken a flying Pokemon. However, none has an advantage against fire Pokemon. Do not take water- or lightning-type Pokemon to the battle, as grass types have strong defenses against these types.

    Unable to Catch

    • Tangela remains with Gym Leader Erika before, during and after the final Celadon Gym Battle. You cannot catch a Tangela yourself in Celadon, even if you defeat its leader. You must catch a Tangela in the wild. Find wild Tangela on Mt. Silver or along Routes 21, 28 and 44 before or after the Celadon Gym battle. Don't bother taking a Tangela to your battle against the Celadon Gym trainers. Fire- and flying-type Pokemon are more effective against grass type Pokemon than other grass types.
