Follow the Story Line
You're an aspiring Pokemon trainer in New Bark Town, Johto, home of Professor Elm. The Professor allows you to keep a Chikorita, Cyndaquil or Totodile as a starter Pokemon after performing a delivery task, starting you off on your journey. Your goal is to become the best trainer in Johto by raising and training your Pokemon and earning badges by beating gym leaders and other bosses. A rival trainer has his mind set on defeating you along with Team Rocket, a criminal agency using Pokemon for evil purposes. The team was defeated in Pokemon LeafGreen and FireRed but have reassembled and must be defeated again.
Explore the Maps
Walking from town to town in Johto allows you to enter into random battles and catch Pokemon. Winning battles also increases the power and skill of your Pokemon. Johto is a large region with many cities to explore, such as Cherrygrove City, Violet City and Azalea Town. Each city has a Pokemon Center which allows you to rest and heal your Pokemon. You can explore caves to catch different breeds of Pokemon. After you beat the game and join the Johto Hall of Fame, you can board a ship and sail to the Kanto region, where Pokemon LeafGreen and FireRed took place. This gives you a whole new map to explore.
Meet Allies and Enemies
You will meet many allies and enemies along the way, sometimes along roads to other cities and sometimes within the cities themselves. Allies may gift you special items while enemies may challenge you to a battle. Among the main characters, allies include Professor Elm, who gifts you your first Pokemon, your mom, who holds onto your extra items and Kurt, who can turn Apricorns into Pokeballs. Some enemies you will meet along the way are your rival, who is constantly competing against you, and Team Rocket, who have reformed to hatch another evil plan.
Catch and Trade Pokemon
Your major goal in Pokemon SoulSilver is to become the best trainer in Johto, joining other famous trainers in the Johto Hall of Fame. To do this, you need to catch as many Pokemon as you can and train them by battling other Pokemon, trainers and competitors. Winning battles gives you and you Pokemon experience, increasing strength for the next battle. If you want to catch all of the Pokemon in the game, you can try trading duplicate Pokemon with a fellow SoulSilver player through the Pokemon Centers in any city.
