What Are All the Regions in Pokemon Soul Silver?

"Pokemon SoulSilver," released for the Nintendo DS in 2010, is a remake of "Pokemon Silver." Like "Silver," "SoulSilver" allows players to visit more than one region over the course of the game. Each region offers new experiences to the player, in addition to unique challenges and Pokemon available only in that region.
  1. Johto

    • "SoulSilver" begins in the Johto region, which is where the entirety of the game's story takes place. The main character, who aspires to be the Pokemon champion, must defeat eight Gym Leaders and earn their badges, after which he can challenge the Elite Four. Throughout the course of the story in Johto, players also must defeat Team Rocket. Johto is a linear journey, as players complete events in a specified order; the game often blocks your progress forward until certain gyms or story lines have been completed. Johto is home to the Battle Frontier and the National Park, which houses the Bug Catching Contest and the Pokeathlon.

    Getting from Johto to Kanto

    • To get from Johto to Kanto, you must first defeat all eight Gym Leaders in Johto and defeat the Elite Four. Once this is accomplished, Professor Elm gives you a ticket for the S.S. Aqua, a ship that ferries guests to Kanto. Upon boarding the ship in Olivine City, you are tasked with finding a missing girl; once this is accomplished, the ship docks in Kanto. After you have completed this chain of events, you no longer need to board the ship to travel to Kanto; you can use the Pokemon move "Fly" to move between the two regions at any time.

    Kanto

    • Once in Kanto, players have access to an additional eight gyms they can challenge. However, unlike Johto, these gyms can be attempted in any order. There is also no Elite Four in Johto, so the gyms exist only as an extra challenge to the player. Kanto features a many Pokemon not seen in Johto, specifically Pokemon from the Sinnoh and Hoenn regions seen in other Pokemon games. Kanto is home to legendary Pokemon such as Mewtwo, Suicune and Articuno, and contains the Celadon Game Corner in Celadon City, where rare Pokemon such as Porygon are available as prizes. The Pal Park, featured in Fuchsia City, allows you to import Pokemon from the Game Boy Advance games to "SoulSilver."

    Safari Zone

    • While not a region in the same sense as Johto or Kanto, the Safari Zone can be considered a region within a region; it features Pokemon that can only be caught there and sets forth a special set of rules by which trainers must abide. Located west of Cianwood City in Johto, the Safari Zone is home to rare Pokemon such as Torkoal and Riolu. You purchase 30 Safari Balls with which to catch Pokemon. Once all 30 Safari Balls are used, the game ends and you keep any Pokemon you catch. There is no time limit in the "SoulSilver" Safari Zone.
