Super Rod Tips for Pokemon: SoulSilver

In "Pokemon SoulSilver," released for the Nintendo DS in 2010, Pokemon can be found in locations other than tall grass. For example, fishing in any body of water is one method that you can use to catch a variety of Water-type Pokemon. The Pokemon you catch is determined by the rod you use. The Super Rod, the best rod in the game, allows you to catch the best Water-type Pokemon.
  1. Getting the Super Rod

    • The Super Rod is found in the Kanto region on Route 15. The quickest way to access Route 15 is to leave Fuchsia City using the eastern exit. Halfway through Route 15 you encounter a house owned by a fisherman. Enter the house and speak to the fisherman, who proclaims his love of fishing. At the end of the conversation, he gives you the Super Rod, the best rod in the game, for free. The Super Rod allows you to catch high level Pokemon in any body of water, and occasionally evolved forms of Pokemon as well. The Super Rod is a key item, meaning it can be used an infinite number of times.

How to Use the Super Rod

    • The Super Rod can be used in any body of water, no matter how big or small the body of water is. Lakes, oceans, rivers and even ponds all contain Pokemon for you to catch. To use the Super Rod, stand on the edge of any body of water or stand on top of a Pokemon who is using the ability "Surf." Select the "Super Rod" entry from the "Key Items" section of your bag to use the Super Rod. Pay close attention to your character; when a Pokemon is hooked, an exclamation mark appears over your character's head. Pressing "A" when the exclamation mark appears initiates a Pokemon battle. If you do not press "A," the Pokemon escapes.

Catching the Pokemon Hooked by the Super Rod

    • The Pokemon battle that occurs once the Pokemon is reeled in is the same as any other Pokemon battle in "SoulSilver." To catch the Pokemon, use status-inducing moves such as Sleep Powder and lower the Pokemon's health bar into the red. However, as only Water types are caught by the Super Rod, avoid moves that cause extra damage to them, such as Electric-type moves. These moves may be too powerful and cause the Water-type Pokemon to faint, making you unable to catch it. Additionally, special Pokemon balls called Net Balls offer an increased chance to catch Water-type Pokemon. These can be bought in Ecruteak City for $1,000 per Net Ball.

Adding the Super Rod to your Quick Item Menu

    • If you are using the Super Rod often, it is possible to map it to an icon for quick use, rather than navigate through the "Bag" menu each time you wish to use it. After the Super Rod is selected in your bag, tap "Register" instead of "Use." A Super Rod icon is placed on the bottom screen of your Nintendo DS. When you are next to a body of water, you only need to tap the Super Rod icon to begin fishing, cutting down on the time you spend between casts.
