What Enhancements Does the DSi Provide for Pokemon Black and White?

"Pokemon Black" and "White," released in 2011, are the last "Pokemon" games to be released on the Nintendo DS family of systems. Generally, there are no differences when playing a game on a regular Nintendo DS and a DSi. However, in the case of "Black" or "White" there is one added bonus only available for DSi or DSi XL users.
  1. "Pokemon Black" and "White"

    • "Pokemon Black" and "White" are part of what is known as Generation V due to the 156 new Pokemon added to the game. Another new feature is the region of Unova where the game takes place. In addition to the upgraded graphics and other cosmetic changes, "Black" and "White" are unique in that you only have access to the 156 new Pokemon until you beat the story mode; previous Pokemon games would often mix old Pokemon with new ones. "Black" and "White" are compatible with "Pearl," "Diamond" and "Platinum," with users being able to battle, trade and communicate with other DS systems over a local or Wi-Fi connection.

    Nintendo DSi

    • Nintendo introduced the DSi in 2009 as an upgraded Nintendo DS. While many of the core features were the same, such as the dual screens, a touch screen, a camera and a microphone, the DSi included improved hardware over the older models. In 2010, the DSi XL was introduced, sporting the largest screens of any Nintendo DS system. All Nintendo DS games are compatible with the Nintendo DSi and XL, including "Pokemon White" and "Black." Almost no game took advantage of the increased hardware of the DSi or DSi XL except for "Pokemon White" and "Black."

    Xtransceiver

    • When either "Pokemon White" or "Black" is played on a Nintendo DSi, the Xtransceiver function becomes available. The Xtransceiver allows you to talk to friends using video chat. Only two players can participate in the video chat at once when connecting online through Wi-Fi, while up to three friends can participate in video chat when connecting locally. The Xtransceiver is only available when both you and your friends are playing "Pokemon White" or "Black" on a Nintendo DSi or DSi XL. In addition, while video chatting with your friends using the Xtransceiver you can draw on their faces using your stylus and add pictures and stamps to their video display. While not a Nintendo DS system, the 3DS can also take advantage of the Xtransceiver in "Pokemon Black" and "White" and can connect to both the DSi and DSI XL.

    Using the Xtransceiver

    • To use the Xtransceiver, you must connect with your friends through the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Every user must enter the second floor of any Pokemon Center. Speak to the woman behind the middle counter and select "Wi-Fi Connection" to connect to your friends. After being transported to the Wi-Fi Room, stand next to your friend and select "Xtransceiver" from the list provided to begin the video chat. If your friend is not playing on a DSi or DSi XL, the "Xtransceiver" option is not provided.
