How to Modify EVs in Pokemon SoulSilver

Part of the engaging complexity of Nintendo DS adventure title ̶0;Pokémon SoulSilver̶1; is due to the EVs, or effort values, which each of the monsters you control can gain. These EVs are attached to a Pokémon̵7;s base stats such as Speed and Defense, but can̵7;t be viewed on-screen. However, you̵7;ll be able to see the effects on your Pokémon, as every four EVs gained increases a stat̵7;s value by one. Modifying EVs enables a Pokémon̵7;s stats to increase further.
  1. Fight Pokémon

    • A primary method of changing the EVs of your Pokémon̵7;s stats is to fight and defeat other Pokémon that give you experience points. Winning such battles will increase the EVs on one of the stats of the Pokémon you used in the fight. Each Pokémon you battle will have EVs allocated to a specific stat, for example, Attack. This means that when you beat that Pokémon, you̵7;ll increase the EV associated with that stat. Stats also increase gradually as your Pokémon gains levels, regardless of EV values. You can̵7;t gain EVs for Pokémon stats by fighting against a friend̵7;s Pokémon, however.

    Vitamins & Berries

    • You can raise or lower EVs on a stat by utilizing special items found in the game. The Pokémart area sells vitamins such as Zinc and Iron. Giving these to a Pokémon will increase the EVs in a specific stat by 10. Each vitamin is tied to a stat; for example, the HP UP item will raise the EVs associated with a creature̵7;s HP stat. By using berries such as Grepa and Pomeg, you can achieve the opposite and lower the EVs of particular stats, provided the EV value is at 100 or more to begin with.

    EXP Share

    • An item called EXP Share allows the experience gained through battling to be shared between every Pokémon in your squad instead of just those that actually fought. Using EXP Share also shares out any EVs gained; so if defeating a Pokémon would earn you two EVs, each Pokémon in your team gains two EVs in the assigned stat.

    Battle Items

    • Equipping other items can help you gain EVs. A number of power items exist that garner you four EVs on a particular stat whenever you defeat a Pokémon. For example, the Power Bracer grants four extra EVs to your creature̵7;s Defense stat. These are granted to the stat connected with the item regardless of whether the rest of the EVs from the battle went to another stat. The item Macho Brace doubles the number of EVs you receive after a battle.

    Hotspots

    • Some game areas contain only wild Pokémon that give EVs to a specific stat, helping you focus on the EVs of a particular stat while training. For example, if you want to raise your EVs associated with the Attack stat, surf in Cerulean City or on Mt. Mortar where you can fight Goldeens and Seakings. If you want to add to your creature̵7;s HP, surf around the Ruins of Alph or the Cliff̵7;s Edge Gate.
