How to Get a Fishing Rod in Pokemon HeartGold

A fishing rod is a necessity if you want to catch sea-based Pokemon in the Nintendo DS game "Pokemon HeartGold." You can obtain two versions of the fishing rod from the same person in Olivine City: the Old Rod, which is the first rod you get and generally only catches low-level Pokemon, and the Good Rod, a strong rod that will allow you to catch higher-level Pokemon.

Instructions

      Go to the southern end of Route 32, where you'll find a Pokemon Center. Go inside.

      Talk to the fishing guru inside, who will offer you an Old Rod. Accept the offer.

      Go to the Olivine City, which is southwest of Ecruteak City, when you want to upgrade to the Good Rod.

      Go to the north side of town and enter a house near the gym.

      Talk to the man inside about fishing, and agree with him when he asks you if you love fishing and the water. He'll give you a Good Rod.
