How to Beat the Electric Gym in Kanto on Pokemon SoulSilver

Collect all the Pokemon badges to climb Mt. Silver and defeat the Pokemon Master, Red, to win Pokemon Soul Silver. The Thunder Badge is in the hands of the electric gym leader, Lieutenant Surge, in Vermillion City. Lt. Surge's team of electric-type Pokemon use attacks like Thunderbolt, Thundershock and Charge Beam. You can neutralize Lt. Surge's attacks by battling with strong, ground-type Pokemon. Ground-type Pokemon are unaffected by electric attacks. Once you defeat Lt. Surge, you'll receive the Thunder Badge and TM 34 Shockwave, a powerful electric type move.

Instructions

  Consider the strength and weaknesses of Lt. Surge's team. Lt. Surge uses a level 51 Raichu, two level 47 Electrodes, a level 47 Magneton, and a level 53 Electabuzz. To overcome Lt. Surge's attacks, make sure that the Pokemon in you party are at least a level 53.

  Pick ground-type Pokemon for the battle. Ground-type Pokemon are immune to electric attacks. Consider using Mamoswine, Sandshrew, Marowak, Sandslash, Diglett, Dugtrip or Groudon in your battle. You can catch various ground-type Pokemon in the area around Vermillion City.

  Start the battle with your strongest ground-type Pokemon using the Earthquake attack.

  Continue the battle using Earthquake. Because you are invincible to Lt. Surge's electric attacks, you can easily defeat Lt. Surge's five Pokemon using only one ground Pokemon with the Earthquake attack. If not, rotate through your ground-type Pokemon until you evidentially overwhelm Lt. Surge's team with your ground attacks.
