How Do You Catch Latias in Pokemon HeartGold

Finish the game by defeating the Elite Four and encounter one of each wild Pokemon in the game to complete the National Pokedex. Check your PokeGear to see which Pokemon you still need to encounter.

Fly to Vermillion City and visit the Pokemon Fan Club to encounter Steven Stone. He will inform you that Latias is now roaming the Kanto region, which triggers the roaming Pokemon event.

Travel to any Route that is adjacent to another Route to begin the search for Latias. Walk through the tall grass to have a Pokemon encounter. After a few encounters, if you do not see a Latias, move to the adjacent Route.

Repeat the same process in the adjacent Route. If Latias does not appear after a few encounters, move back to the first Route. Each time you leave the area, Latias will move to a different area, so by sticking to only two Routes you create a scenario where Latias will eventually be in your Route through process of elimination.

Place a Pokemon in the front of your party that has an ability that prevents another Pokemon from fleeing. This prevents Latias from escaping before the battle begins, which it will always attempt at the start of the battle.

Attack Latias with your strongest level Pokemon to lower its health points. After it has taken considerable damage, use a higher level PokeBall, such as a Heavy Ball, to capture Latias. If it is not weak enough to capture it, continue to battle it until you can successfully capture the Pokemon.
