How to Make Your Own R4DS Skins

The R4DS (also known as the Revolution 4 DS) is a storage device that allows Nintendo DS owners to play backup and homebrew titles on their handheld device. The device looks like a standard Nintendo DS cartridge, but has a slot at the top for a MicroSD card. The device stores all the games and data on the MicroSD card and you also have the ability to place your own skins, also called "Themes," on it. These skins change the appearance of the main menu of the DS after it boots up.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the free R4 theme creator called "Alice" from the Box website.

    • 2

Double-click the downloaded file to start the program. Click "Logo Screen" at the top left of the program window. Click "Open" next to "Image Location" and select the image you want to appear on the upper screen of the DS while you are in the main menu.

    • 3

Click "Icon Screen" at the top left of the program window. Click "Open" next to "Image Location" and select the image you want to appear on the lower screen of the DS while on the main menu.

    • 4

Click the "Game Icon" slot at the bottom of the program screen and select "Open" next to "Image Location̶1; just below it. Select the image you want to use as a game icon for the skin. Repeat the process for the "Media Icon" and the "Slot 2" icon.

    • 5

Click "File Screen" at the top of the program window. Click "Open" next to "Image Location" and select the image you want to appear on the top screen of the DS while you are selecting which games you want to load.

    • 6

Click "Info Screen" at the top of the program window. Click "Open" next to "Image Location" and select the image you want to appear on the bottom screen of the DS while you are selecting which games you want to load.

    • 7

Click the "Export Theme" button once you are satisfied with how your skin looks. A preview on the right hand side of the program window will show you exactly how the final skin will look when used on the DS.

    • 8

Enter a name for your skin as well as an author name in the appropriate text boxes on the "Export" page. Click "Export" and the new skin will be saved to your PC. Connect the MicroSD card from the R4 to your PC and copy the new skin over to use it on your DS.
