How to Trade Pokemon From HeartGold to Black & White

Trading Pokemon has always been a prominent feature of the best-selling video game series. Transporting Pokemon from an older game to a more recent version can be complicated. Pokemon cannot be exchanged in trades between "Pokemon HeartGold" and "Pokemon Black" or "White," for instance. Instead, they are transferred one-way through a special process. By making a transfer from "HeartGold" to "Black" or "White," players can continue adventuring with their favorite Pokemon.

Obtain the National Pokedex by defeating the Elite Four. To transfer, you must win the National Pokedex on your copy of "Pokemon Black" or "White." Follow the progress of the game's story by defeating each of the gym leaders leading up to the Elite Four encounter. Once you win the Elite Four battles, you will receive the National Pokedex.

Insert a copy of "Pokemon HeartGold" into a second Nintendo DS and power on the game console. You can only complete the transfer if another Nintendo DS is active with "HeartGold."

    • 3

Visit the Poke Transfer Lab located on Route 15 in "Pokemon Black" or "White." The lab is the only place where you can perform the transfer.

    • 4

Download the "Download Play" application by connecting online through the Poke Transfer Lab. The first time you connect at the lab, you will be prompted to download the application, which enables you to transfer Pokemon.

    • 5

Choose six Pokemon to transfer. Once the application is downloaded, you will be prompted to transfer six Pokemon to your "Pokemon Black" or "White" game. Choose wisely because the Pokemon cannot be brought back to "HeartGold" once they have been transferred.

    • 6

Play the Poke Transfer mini-game to complete the transfer process. Once the transfer is initiated, the game will begin on the "Pokemon Black" or "White" screen. You will have a limited amount of time to capture the six Pokemon you selected by shooting them with a special bow as they move around the screen. Each Pokemon you capture in the mini-game will be saved to your "Black" or "White" game.
